Good Bitches Baking West and Central Auckland Chapters are making the city a little kinder with their book-launch fundraiser on the evening of Wednesday 1 May at The Tannery, New Lynn.

The fundraiser is three-fold: helping raise funds for the not-for-profit; supporting one of its West Auckland Good Bitches, Michele Powles, a writer who has co-written When We Remember to Breathe with Renee Liang, a poet, playwright and paediatrician; and making Good Bitches’ recipient charities’ days a little sweeter with a special baking drive.

As Head Bitches Jacinta Khiu and Avantika Gupta say: ‘We wanted to make our fundraiser a little kinder and sweeter: we’re baking a mega-load of cakes to be collected at the event and donated the next day to a list of amazing charities, including Women’s Refuge and The Auckland City Mission”.

The kindness does not stop there. Lisette du Plessis, publisher at Magpie Pulp, has committed to donating a portion of the profits from the new book to Good Bitches Baking too.

The fundraiser will celebrate kindness and the themes of the book: mess, magic and mothering.

Local comedian, writer and actor Renee Lyons will MC a panel of rockstar mums – Emma Espiner (The Spinoff/Newsroom), Tania Page (TVNZ) and Sia Trokenheim (Step Dave) – each taking on a theme from the book and championing its importance in our day-to-day life.

As MC, Renee Lyons will mediate, offer prompts and play devil’s advocate. And eat cake – A LOT OF CAKE!

The fundraiser is on Wednesday 1 May, 7-9pm,. The Tannery, 44b Portage Road, New Lynn, Auckland.Tickets cost $40 and include a copy of the book, nibbles and a glass of wine. Tickets are limited and can be purchased online from Good Bitches Baking.

When We Remember to Breathe is an exchange about the small moments, the disasters, the guilt trips and the glory, the first steps, and the wonderment of watching kids grow into real little people. It is powerful and poignant Kiwi writing, giving a voice to the modern women, shooting straight from the hip and direct from the heart. The book is an uplifting testimony to what gives life its meaning: the people we love, the challenges we face and the life we give.

When We Remember to Breathe can be purchased online at magpiepulp.com/shop or from bookstores from 1 May 2019.

Good Bitches Baking is a network of people, showing kindness to those in their communities who are having a tough time. The Good Bitches do this by baking for charities. Too many people in the community are having a tough time: women and children fleeing domestic violence, families with children in hospital, those using food banks and soup kitchens, residents in hospice and their loved ones. Knowing someone cares enough to make them a treat helps many through the toughest of days.
