A partner at law firm Russell McVeagh has resigned following an independent investigation into complaints of inappropriate behaviour while drinking.

Board Chair Malcolm Crotty confirmed the resignation in a statement today, saying the firm was “deeply disappointed” in the partner.

“A thorough investigation substantiates the complaints and the partner concerned has apologised and tendered his resignation,” Mr Crotty said.

Mr Crotty said the firm is committed to changing the workplace culture.

“The partner concerned let the firm down and we have now lost trust and confidence in him. The Board determined that his conduct has fallen below our expected standards and we have accepted his resignation.

“There is no place for inappropriate conduct at our firm. Despite the circumstances, it is encouraging that our people have spoken up.”

Mr Crotty said Russell McVeagh has arranged to meet with the law society.

The firm was hit by a fresh misconduct scandal last month after it was revealed a partner made inappropiate druken remarks at a client function.

Russell McVeagh was also in the spotlight earlier this year over serious allegations of sexual misconduct from senior lawyers and its lack of response.

Dame Margaret Bazley led an independent review into the Russell McVeagh after the first allegations of sexual assualt and harrassment were brought to light.

Dame Margaret described groping, excessive drinking, sexual misconduct and bullying in her review which was released in July.
