PM’s Post-Cabinet Press Conference 15/10/18: Fuel, Leaks

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern again discussed rising fuel prices at Monday’s post-cabinet press conference. The government plans to progress amendments to the Commerce Act that would allow a formal investigation of the petrol market (and other markets) through second reading this week and invited the opposition to reconsider their opposition to the bill.

The opposition, however, may be a bit busy, with Ardern also indicating the spectacular aftermath of National Party leak inquiry was a matter for National Party. She said Labour would contest any Botany by-election.

Other topics included the apparent murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi Arabian embassy in Turkey, the relation between the Government moves against high fuel prices and the commitment to act on climate change, the New Zealand Transport Agency’s failures in compliance checks, Meridian’s removal of prompt payment discounts, meeting with the Foreign Minister of Japan, Pacific debt, the possibility of China (or the United States) joining the CPTPP, New Zealanders fined by an Israeli court for writing a letter to Lorde, urgent actions on teacher recruitment, and preparations for a referendum on recreational cannabis.
