Facilitated by the Hurunui District Council’s Community Team, this month the ‘Nui Hui’ Youth Forum took place in the Cheviot Area School Hall. Over 90 young people from around the district came along to the workshop event with internationally recognised community development expert Peter Kenyon.

The ‘Nui Hui’ brought together the Hurunui’s youth to share their ideas on what young people can achieve in their own communities when they dream big and take action.

Youth Council Deputy Chair Ashleigh-Jane Brown, who attended the event, says she really enjoyed how Peter showed what other development projects communities around the world have implemented.

“It was great for us to see how the various examples of initiatives in small towns around the world had big benefits. It made me think that it is possible for us to enhance our smaller Hurunui communities in the same ways.”

The ‘Nui Hui’ was the last event in a series of seminars and forums from Peter Kenyon taking place throughout the district, where he shared his knowledge on how small towns can build the best possible future for themselves.

“The feedback and ideas that emerged from the event were inspiring, and will be implemented in the development of the Hurunui Youth Strategy document”, says Event Coordinator Krystal Jennings.

“The Youth Strategy working group made up of Hurunui Youth Leaders, will now host smaller focus groups throughout the district, with the Hurunui Youth Strategy to be launched during Youth Week in May”, she says.

The Hurunui Youth strategy and its associated events are made possible by Ministry of Youth Development funding.
