Immigration Minister Michael Woodhouse said theImmigration Amendment Bill (No 2) sent a message to those exploiting immigrant workers that this must stop.

It would toughen up punishments and give greater powers of investigation. The bill would also amend the deportation process to make it simpler. It would also make it easier to revoke residency visas when those applying had provided false information to gain the visa.

Iain Lees-Galloway said Labour would oppose the bill not because the party supported exploiting migrant workers, but because the bill would not work as it was window dressing to cover the reality was the Government had made it easier for migrant workers to be exploited elsewhere.

The third reading of the bill was completed by 61 to 58 with National, ACT and United Future in support.

Debate on the third reading of the Animal Welfare Amendment Bill was interrupted when the House rose at 6pm.
