Meeting significant in building relationships

A significant step to build relationships between Horowhenua District Council and local hapū took place last Sunday.

Six Council representatives including Chief Executive David Clapperton and District Mayor Brendan Duffy were welcomed onto Huia Marae, just north of Levin’s township.

There they met with representatives from Ngāti Huia ki Poroutawhao, Ngāti Kikopiri, Kereru Marae, and Ngāti Huia ki Matau in an informal visit lasting over two hours.

Mr Clapperton says it was instrumental to build relationships, improve consultation and encourage local hapū to engage in Council activities.

He says it was also very valuable for establishing contacts, so that Council knew who to approach regarding matters and issues of interest to specific hapū.

“It really furthers Council’s steps towards better consultation and engagement, but also expresses how we value all hapū and iwi in the District, as well as show respect for Māori culture and protocol.”

Ngāti Huia ki Poroutawhao Komiti chairman Justin Tamihana says it was a very worthwhile opportunity.

“It was a wonderful occasion and provided a good platform for us all to move forward and build positive and sustainable relationships,” Mr Tamihana said.

“The hapū represented were very proud to be able to host a group from Council for the first time, and which included the Mayor. It was such a meaningful visit.”
