Press Release by Save the Basin Campaign Incorporated, Monday 9th December.
Representatives of communities from across Wellington will gather at the Basin Reserve at 9.30am on Wednesday 11th December to show their strong and ongoing opposition to the proposed construction of a flyover at this site of national and international significance.
Tim Jones, Co-convenor of Save the Basin Campaign Incorporated, says: “The recently released visual imaging illustrates just how significant an impact the proposed flyover will have on the iconic Basin Reserve and surrounding area.” Jones says that the proposal is unacceptable to a large number of Wellingtonians and further demonstrates that the proposed flyover is not only poor transport planning, but terrible urban design.
The proposed flyover, which has been dubbed ‘a monstrosity’ by Wellington Central MP Grant Robertson, has recently been given a damning report by the Board of Inquiry-commissioned independent transport peer reviewer who found 49 issues with the proposal.
Tim Jones says: “The report by the Board’s independently appointed reviewer reinforces the concerns of the numerous local residents, community groups, businesses and organisations, including local schools, that are opposed to the construction of a flyover at the Basin Reserve.”
Along with over one hundred other submitters in opposition to the proposal, Save the Basin Campaign is in the midst of preparing its case to the Board of Inquiry. The hearing will begin in February with a decision due by the middle of 2014.
