Consultation meetings are underway on the East Coast as, Ngati Porou Hauora Te Runanganui o Ngati Porou and Tairawhiti District Health seek input on a review of health services for the Coast.
Last year, the three boards jointly commissioned a report on the current and future configuration of health services for the East Coast. The review report was delivered to the boards in July and will now be used as the basis for a consultation process with Ngati Porou Hauora staff, the East Coast communities and Tairawhiti District Health Board staff. .
The community consultation hui are a way for the three Boards to gather feedback on the directions proposed in the report, and to help inform them in decision making about current and future health services.
The objectives for the review are to gain an in-depth understanding of the current health status and health needs of the population on the Coast as well as likely future health needs.
The three organisations want to understand the strengths and weaknesses with the current service delivery models as well as the factors likely to impact on clinical service delivery. So the review document includes information about demographic projections and other key influences.
The report describes future options for planned and unplanned health care on the East Coast and within Ngati Porou Hauora, and takes into account the operation of the Puhi Kaiti services (and other health provider services) to make recommendations about how these services interact or would need to operate to support the Coast services.
The review also provides high level facility and site design options, alongside high level financial and non-financial assessments.
Sapere Consulting Group was commissioned to carry out the review through research and direct investigation with stakeholders – such as the service provision staff, users of health services on the East Coast, funders and representatives of the community. The review process and activity was overseen by a group representative of the three organisations and the East Coast community.
The review document was approved by the three Boards as the basis of a consultation process with stakeholders that will ultimately inform the joint decision making of the three Boards. No decisions have been made. The consultation hui outline the content of the report that the three Boards agree with, as well as those matters that require community consultation and input.
Consultation documents including the report itself, presentation slides to be discussed at the meetings, a schedule of meeting dates and venues, and a question and answer sheet, are available on the TDH website at www.tdh.org.nz, the NPH website at www.nph.org.nz, and the Te Runanganui o Ngati Porou at www.ngatiporou.com
The three Boards hope that as many people as possible are able to take part in this consultation process.
This report, and the consultation process itself, is very significant. People on the East Coast have worse health outcomes than the general population. There is close accord between the three Boards to support and develop Coast services to make them more effective and sustainable.
