For Immediate Release:
Bay of Plenty artist Te Mete Solomon Smith and his partner and Event Organiser, Joseph Hayes, have been announced as the first finalists in ZM’s Fabulous Big Gay Wedding contest.
The couple are already tipped as the competition favourites. “We feel so honoured to even be considered” Te Mete says on the back of being selected as a finalist with Hayes.
Their fortuitous Story starts 2 and a half years ago and is filled with twists and turns including the sad passing of Te Mete’s Grandfather who was a champion for the couple’s relationship. After the passing of Te Mete’s “Papa” the pair moved to the Bay Of Penty town Opotiki where Hayes started work as an Events Coordinator. This allowed Te Mete the opportunity to dedicate his time to his art which has literally painted the couple into history.
Te Mete held a fundraising auction in May of this year. Proceeds from sale of his works were donated to the New Zealand AIDS Foundation, where Louisa Wall bought a portrait he’d painted of her to mark the passage of marriage equality legislation. The image is also on the front of the Marriage Equality Amendment Bill.
The winning pair will be married at St-Matthew-in-the-City at 8AM on the day marriage equality comes into effect in New Zealand, 19 August. Listeners of Radio Station ZM are helping to bring the Big Day into fruition by choosing all aspects of the wedding from the location and theme to the dress style and entertainment. It is evolving every day. The Final winners will be decided by voting.
Four other couples in contention will be announced across this week.
