Rural Women NZ applauds telenursing scholarships to overcome rural health disparities
Rural Women New Zealand welcomes the announcement of two telenursing scholarships for Maori nurses to help deliver health services in isolated rural communities.

The new $10,000 Medibank Community Fund postgraduate scholarships were awarded this week to two nurses from the far north – Jewel Reti from Whangarei and Putiputi McMahon from Kaitaia.

Putiputi said many Māori she works with cannot access health care through their GPs due to cost, distance and poor transport.

“Access to health care is a significant issue for many people living in rural and remote communities,” says Rural Women NZ health spokesperson, Margaret Pittaway.

“Using technological solutions such as telenursing is an important step forward in delivering improved health care in rural areas.”
