The redevelopment of central Christchurch has taken an exciting step forward with today’s announcement of the Amazing Place playground winners, says Christchurch Central Development Unit Director Warwick Isaacs.

The winners were announced by Prime Minister John Key at a gala event in Hagley Park’s Geodome this afternoon.

“It was just great to see so many schools get behind this competition and work their entries in to the term’s syllabus,” Mr Isaacs says.

“It is clear that the children of Canterbury really want to be involved in the rebuild of this city and play a part in how it will look for future generations. That’s exactly what we had hoped for when we developed the blueprint in the Christchurch Central Recovery Plan.”

The panel of eight judges, who are all experts in playground design, education or childhood play, donated their time to select the winning entries.

The winning entries will be given to the playground designers so that the key themes and impressions of the children’s work can be taken into account.

“We’ll be setting up a meeting between the children and the designers so the kids themselves can explain their vision,” said Mr Isaacs.

Mr Isaacs says the city playground will be a key part of the compact, green city that is being developed, so that children and families can enjoy the new environment.

“We know from all of the community consultation after the earthquakes that people want a central city that everyone can enjoy and be proud of, and most importantly that the next generation to grow up in a city they love.”
