The NZISM welcome the recommendations made by the Independent Health and Safety Taskforce, and urge Government to take action on the recommendations.

Tony Rigg, National Manager of the NZISM says “there have been previous reports and recommendations made including those from NOHSAC, but little action taken in relation to them by Government- the time for change is now” Tony echoes Rob Jagers comments that the current system is “not fit for purpose”, and fully supports of the establishment of a HasPa and pathway for occupational registration of health and safety professionals. This is long overdue.

Tony Rigg believes that “Government need to send a clear signal to industry and practitioners alike, that the days of seeking health and safety advice from unqualified and unregistered practitioners is over – those in the workplace deserve better protection“.

Tony states that the NZISM currently operate a professional membership pathway and the NZISM have offered to work with Government to roll this out to all health and safety practitioners nationally. “As the professional body for health and safety practitioners, we should lead the registration process on behalf of our members – with the support and mandate from Government”
