Books change lives

Books that change lives will be the focus of Christchurch City Libraries NZ Book Month activities and events in March.

Carolyn Robertson Unit Manager Libraries and Information says books really can and do change lives.

“It’s not just about reading to learn things or to follow an interesting story although that is all good as well. It’s about books that change the way you think and open your eyes to new ideas and new places. My childhood favourite was Winne the Pooh by AA Milne and one of the novels that has influenced me as an adult was The World According to Garp by John Irving. For others it will be a different book. Reading the right book at the right time can really make a difference in the lives of our children. So come along to the Library and join in, participate and rediscover the wonders that books can bring into our lives. And you might just happen to read that special, life-changing book.”

There are free events, seminars and workshops to suit all ages: If you have young children, come and hear the hilarious story of The Three Bear’s Breakfast, get involved in a pre-school Storytime session or attend a Learning Party for Four year olds.

If your children are primary school age, get them involved in the Reading Crusade either through your school or online – they might win their height in books!

Late primary students can come and hear award-winning Rachael King talk about her book Red Rocks. Teens come and listen to Karen Healey talk about her novels – some events even come with free food!

The sold-out event The Great NZ Quiz Night hosted by Joe Bennett and featuring entertainment by the Loons has already proven how popular Book Month activities are. But other events still have spaces.

Book Month is also the time to learn for free – come and find out e-books, how to blog and even how to write and publish your own e-book.
