Interpretation information session offered to local migrants
ROTORUA 05.02.13: Rotorua District Council (RDC) is encouraging local migrants interested in offering to help with interpretation services to attend an interpretation information session this month.
The information session for interpreters is being held on Tuesday 26 February from 6pm to 7.30pm at the council Civic Centre.
RDC Settlement Support coordinator Heather McAllister said Decypher Interpreting Services is offering an 11-week course in March. She said migrants will find out about the course content, time commitment, benefits of completing the course, and the support available at this month’s information evening.
“Many migrants interpret for their communities however they can sometimes become more involved in the situation than originally intended, and are then unsure of how to deal with it,” said Ms McAllister.
“This is an ideal opportunity to improve people’s interpretation skills so they’ll feel more confident when interpreting for their own migrant communities and avoid putting themselves at risk.
“There’s also the opportunity to pick up paid interpreting work in Rotorua or to assist local government agencies.”
Anyone interested in registering for the information session for interpreters should contact Heather McAllister by phone on (07) 351 7054 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
