A joint Taskforce between Wanganui District Council and UCOL gets under way next week with both organisations’ governing bodies committing to Terms of Reference and joint resourcing.

Mayor Annette Main and UCOL Chair Trevor Goodwin agree that this is an encouraging step forward and both organisations are looking forward to making a positive contribution to the Taskforce.

The Taskforce will make recommendations based on the findings of four working parties which will be established in the next few weeks. Areas covered by the working parties include looking at the opportunities and profile for arts in the community, identifying opportunities for science, technology, engineering and maths tertiary education (which is a central government priority), developing a plan for improving tertiary education for those who are not in employment, education or training and to explore and recommend strategies that will improve UCOL’s connections with the local community.

Members on the Taskforce will include three elected members from Wanganui District Council, and three from the UCOL Council.

The four working parties will be made up of one representative from both the Council and UCOL as well as members from the community. The selection process and number of members for the working parties will be considered by the Taskforce at its first meeting.
