Food In Schools Bill Will Help Children Learn

NZEI Te Riu Roa is adding its voice to the growing call to support new legislation that would help to feed children in low decile schools.

“Our members working in schools know that providing breakfasts and lunches in decile 1 and 2 schools will help lift the achievement of children living in poverty,” said Laures Park, Acting National Secretary.

“Politicians have an opportunity to give real benefit to our neediest children by supporting Hone Harawira’s bill to feed children at school,” said Ms Park.

“Breakfasts and lunches in schools will make the classroom a better environment for learning, with children who are fed and ready to learn.”

Ms Park said that NZEI was pleased to stand alongside other community organisations in support of the Education (Breakfast and Lunch Programmes in Schools) Amendment Bill.

“We also know that many younger children in early childhood education would also benefit from such a programme,” said Ms Park. “Government has a responsibility to make sure that children are fed and ready to learn.”
