Corrections Minister Accountable For Privacy Blunders

New Zealand First is calling on the Government to tighten controls at the Department of Corrections in the wake of a serious privacy breach where sensitive criminal information was mistakenly faxed to a removal company.

The latest breach comes hard on the heels of a Rimutaka prisoner and prison visitor being “lost”, a blunder which could have seen the duo visit the local tavern.

Corrections spokesperson Asenati Lole-Taylor says Corrections Minister Anne Tolley must change a habit of a lifetime and take action to stop further breaches.

“The Minister is sitting by watching Corrections Department run itself into the ground.

“The Government is doing a disservice to New Zealanders by not taking these incidents seriously.

“For example, it’s astounding that Corrections thinks it appropriate to use an antiquated fax machine to send information in the Internet age.

“The Corrections Minister is accountable and must front up with workable solutions instead of hiding her head in the sand,” says Mrs Lole-Taylor.
