Following an intensive 6 week development programme, New Zealand’s leading Maori Contemporary Dance Company – Atamira Dance Company proudly presents ‘HOU 2012’ on Saturday March 24 at Corban Estate Arts Centre.
Now in its third year this highly successful annual programme develops both the individual skills of the company’s choreographers and dancers whilst extending the company’s creativity and community networks under the guidance and influence of Kaumatua, Noho marae and Tikanga Maori. In essence this initiative is intended to encourage participants to think more strategically and critically about their own work.
HOU 2012 boasts short works from senior choreographers Moss Patterson, Taane Mete & Jack Gray who have been mentored in this process by Charles Koroneho. Moss Patterson is inspired by the traditional art of Moko, Taane Mete’s work is an exploration of the female form in relation to light, and Jack Gray is inspired but the Kamira manuscripts from his Mitimiti Whakapapa.
Dancers Maaka Pepene, Kelly Nash, Nancy Wijohn ,Bianca Hyslop , Dan Cooper and Mark Bonnington bring these works to life on stage in the company’s new home at Corban Estate Arts Centre. They will also perform two other short works from the company’s existing repertoire.
Works developed in HOU have the opportunity to be further developed within the company if they are chosen to be included in a short works tour, or outside the company in festival programmes around the country and overseas.
Atamira Dance Company tour both nationally and internationally presenting professional dance productions inspired by Aotearoa’s history, legends and contemporary issues. They recently celebrated their 11th Birthday.
‘HOU 2012’ coincides with Waitakere Open Studio weekend and Atamira Dance Company welcomes the public to their open studio to observe the dancers in rehearsal from 1 – 3pm.
HOU 2012 plays:
7pm, Saturday March 24 at Corban Estate Arts Centre.
