Glen Innes action against evictions today

A group of Auckland protesters will move into an empty Housing New Zealand house in Glen Innes on Saturday afternoon to support the fight against the eviction of 156 families from the area.

After a community rally and a BBQ on Saturday afternoon, Socialist Aotearoa will occupy a vacant house in Glen Innes to protest the evictions.

Families in 156 state homes are being evicted as Housing New Zealand sells their homes to property developers. They were sent eviction letters in September and will be issued eviction notices in May if they do not leave their homes.

Last Monday saw a public meeting of 300 Glen Innes residents and activists from across Auckland city. Residents spoke about the effects of HNZ threats and intimidation and have vowed to resist the evictions.

“We are taking over this empty house to protest the evictions of residents who have lived in this community for nearly fifty years and to stop the National Government selling off this house to property speculators,” Socialist Aotearoa spokesperson Shane Malva said.

“We want to safeguard these community assets for future generations and stop National from privatising more of our city’s resources,” concluded Mr. Malva.
