Approximately one-half of all adults will suffer from neck pain at some point in their lives. For some individuals, the pain is a nagging inconvenience, for others it can feel like an undeserved life sentence of pain and disability.

Unfortunately, the cause of chronic neck pain is often unknown, and there are very few treatment options available to people who experience ongoing neck pain. While Osteopathy is well recognised as a treatment option for back pain, sciatica, headaches or pains in joints such as shoulders, knees and ankles, its potential effectiveness as a treatment option for individuals with neck pain is not yet known.

Currently, student researchers at the Unitec Osteopathy Clinic are investigating the effectiveness of Osteopathic treatments and techniques for individuals with neck pain. “Osteopathy is a form of manual therapy, which takes a holistic, whole body approach to injuries” Said Monique Gasson, student and researcher, “We are currently looking for individuals with neck pain to volunteer for this research”. Neck pain sufferers who enrol in this study will receive six Osteopathic treatments free of charge and be required to attend three to four measurement sessions where questionnaires and other measures are carried out. The study takes place at the Unitec Osteopathic Clinic in Mt Albert.
