CTU calls for cross party support of a Members Bill drawn today that would Mondayise Waitangi Day and ANZAC day where they fall in the weekend. The Holidays (Full Recognition of Waitangi Day and Anzac Day) Amendment Bill will ensure that New Zealanders would still get time off to spend with their families when these two public holidays fall on a weekend.

CTU President Helen Kelly said “we support this Bill as a way to ensure New Zealanders still got a day off to spend with their families when Waitangi or ANZAC days fall on a weekend and call on all parties to support this Bill as a way to recognise these two significant public holidays and let workers enjoy them with time off regardless of what day they fall on.”

“Business already budgets for these two public holidays on five out of every seven years – recognising these two days for workers on the two years out of seven that they fall on the weekend shouldn’t present a huge burden on business.”

“Last year both holidays fell at the weekend, meaning that kiwi workers missed out on two public holidays. This Bill addresses some of the widely felt sense of unfairness last year at missing out on time off to enjoy with their families.” ENDS
