Who’s for a BBQ? Better still, who’s for a BBQ with ukuleles providing the sound track? Sausages and ukes

Who’s for a BBQ? Better still, who’s for a BBQ with ukuleles providing the sound track?
“The DCM Christmas BBQ gives cheer to people who are experiencing hardship or loneliness, when the world around them is spending up and celebrating,” says DCM director Stephanie McIntyre.
“Having our very own ukulele band as well adds to the fun and enjoyment,” she says.
The band has been going for a couple of years, explains DCM Outreach Worker Alan Norman, the musician who directs the ukulele band. “Anyone can come along and join in – we show them a few chords to get started, and then they’re away.”
“The players pick the music themselves, so we have a pretty wide repertoire!” he adds.
“We have between five and ten players each week. Making music together is a great confidence builder. Anyone who’s been in a group or sung in a choir knows that nice feeling of being part of something.”
At last year’s BBQ the ukulele band led a singalong that everyone enjoyed.
DCM doesn’t have a Christmas Day event, but there are other organisations around Wellington that do – phone the DCM office (384-7699) to find out details.
Instead, DCM makes sure it is open on the business days between Christmas and New Year, when there is a strong need to provide its usual services.
