A post mortem examination has been completed on the body of 43 year old Phillip Cottrell who died as a result of an unprovoked and vicious assault in Boulcott Street around 5:30am on Saturday morning.

Officer in charge of the investigation, Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Miller says the post mortem was completed late this afternoon.

“Preliminary results indicate Mr Cottrell’s injuries were consistent with blunt impact trauma and multiple fractures to his head, neck and extremities (left arm), including extensive brain injuries.”

D/S/S Miller says a large investigation team has spent much of the day making further enquiries into Mr Cottrell’s death.

“We have managed to identify the courier driver who was in the area at the time of the incident, who is not connected in any way to the incident. We are still making enquiries to identify a male and a female walking in the area at the time, as well as a taxi driver. We do not believe any of these people are connected in any way either but would like to speak to them to ascertain if they saw or heard anything suspicious.”

D/S/S Miller says a large amount of CCTV footage has been obtained and staff have begun to analyse it, however this is a long process which takes some time.

“I remain confident that we will locate those persons responsible for this vicious and cowardly attack and bring them to justice.”
