Japanese marathon runners lap up New Zealand grass-fed beef
New Zealand grass-fed beef has become an anticipated treat for runners competing in the giant Naha Marathon in Okinawa, Japan, run last week.
Beef + Lamb New Zealand has again had a stand offering New Zealand beef to marathon runners and spectators near the finish line of the 42 kilometre run.
Beef + Lamb New Zealand Market Manager, Japan, John Hundleby said the beef had developed a real following at the event which this year attracted around 24,000 runners.
“We’ve been running the grass-fed beef stand at the marathon for three years and it’s by far the most popular food on offer at the event.
“Japanese people clearly understand the health and nutritional merits of the grass-fed beef and there’s no doubt they also love its taste.”
Another feature at the marathon was four runners, including a Tokyo-based TV announcer, who wore New Zealand grass-fed beef branded shirts during the race.
Hundleby says Okinawa has for many years been a key market segment for New Zealand grass-fed beef. San-A, one of the two major supermarket chains in Okinawa, has carried New Zealand beef as its main imported beef product and is the largest single retail customer in Japan for chilled New Zealand grass-fed beef. New Zealand beef is also regularly available at restaurants and other supermarkets in Okinawa.
Beef + Lamb New Zealand runs events like this on behalf of sheep and beef farmers to encourage consumers to choose New Zealand grass-fed beef.
