Hosted by the Sustainable Business Network and sponsored by ATEED, Sustainable City Showcase 2011 is aiming to show off the inspiring New Zealand businesses, government, community and non-profits leading the way towards a sustainable future. The event, taking place in Shed 10 on Auckland’s Queen’s Wharf, represents a huge collaborative effort and practical demonstration of what a sustainable city will look and feel like, given the creative solutions already provided by New Zealanders today.
Within Shed 10 are a series of zones, following the journey through a sustainable city: from the home to the shop to the workplace to outside space. There will be fantastic opportunities to network in the sustainable ‘café’ zone, featuring free Vodafone Wi-Fi. This isn’t a regular old trade show. It’s a much more freeform event in a new central venue for Auckland. With over 110 exhibitors signing up so far, from electric vehicles, eco-tourism, ethical fashion to natural burials, the whole spectrum of living (and dying!) is going to be covered off.
November 9th kicks off with a Conscious Commuter Challenge on the Waterfront, featuring an array of sustainable and ethically minded breakfast foods and a chance to network with like-minded business people. A range of demonstrations highlighting sustainability – including composting, healthy living, sustainable food and cooking, green transport and more – will be happening throughout the day but centred around lunch time and the afternoon.
The showcase will close with a Green Drinks networking evening from 5-7pm with organic beer and wine and food on sale. People will be able to buy products from a range of exhibitors, from fresh produce to clothing and pretty much everything in between! Digital earth cinema is open all day on the 9th, featuring Next space, spatial visualisation via digital earth, and the Outlook for Someday film festival.
Rachel Brown, CEO of the Sustainable Business Network, is delighted with how this unique showcase is evolving.
“The Sustainable City Showcase is the most creative collaboration with members and supporters SBN has been a part of yet. The emerging showcase is already taking great shape and sets the scene nicely for the NZI National Sustainable Business Network Awards event on Tuesday 8 November which is always a ‘who’s who’ in sustainable business,” says Brown.
“Day 2 is our chance to showcase our members. It kicks off with the Conscious Commuter Challenge, runs all day with NZ and international films, a range of demonstrations, giveaways, products to purchase, expertise, exhibitions, and a fabulous taste fest which culminates at the end of the day with Auckland Green Drinks. This is certainly a waterfront event with plenty for all,” she says.
Clyde Rogers, General Manager Business & Sector Development at ATEED, says the event aligns to ATEED’s and Auckland Council’s goal of Auckland becoming an innovation hub of the Asia-Pacific region.
“Our support for the showcase demonstrates our desire to create a sustainable eco-economy in Auckland. We need to be at the forefront of sustainable business practice to become an innovation hub of export driven internationally-connected companies. This is a unique event for Auckland that not only brings together like-minded businesses to share best practice but also highlights the best of sustainable business achievements to the public. I encourage all businesses leaders in Auckland to embrace this important event and mark it as a must-see in their diaries”
