Occupy movements around the country have stepped up their nationwide coordination this week, using web-based conferencing to plan simultaneous events in four major centres today, tying in to the 11/11/11 global day of action.
The “People’s Parliament”, taking place at Occupy sites in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin at 5:30pm, is an open public forum centered around discussion about visions for New Zealand’s future.
“We’re hoping to provide a platform in which all people of Aotearoa can actively engage in discussions about how to change things for the better, away from systems of inequality and towards systems that work for everyone” says Ruby, an Occupy Wellington supporter.
According to the Occupy Wellington group’s website, the inclusive public forum is “in contrast to the Politicians’ Parliament at the Beehive, where a select few make decisions on behalf of everyone else”.
The event coincides with Armistice Day celebrations of peace.
At 11am this morning, Occupy groups around the country held a minute of silence and reflection for those working towards peace and environmental, economic and social justice.
Locations of nationwide People’s Parliament events at 5:30pm today:
Auckland/Tāmaki Makaurau: Aotea Square
Wellington/Te Whanganui a Tara: Civic Square
Christchurch/Ōtautahi: Hagley Park
Dunedin/Ōtepoti: The Octagon
