NZ First – Cooperation Not Coalition

Press Release – New Zealand First Party

Rt Hon Winston Peters says some political parties and commentators appear to be confused about the position New Zealand First is taking serving in Opposition for the next three years.NZ First – Cooperation Not Coalition Rt Hon Winston Peters says some political parties and commentators appear to be confused about the position New Zealand First is taking serving in Opposition for the next three years.

New Zealand First announced on November 6th that the party would not go into coalition with either National or Labour, or the Greens or the Maori Party or anyone else for that matter.

Mr Peters says by not going into a coalition, New Zealand First is simply going on to the Opposition benches where it will support good ideas but vote against policies like selling taxpayer assets and farmland and privatizing marine areas.

“We believe in the democratic process. We believe that the party that gets the most votes on Saturday should try to form the next government.

“We will not be part of a coalition government, but that does not mean we cannot or will not work with other parties in that government if their policies are in the best interests of the majority of New Zealanders. The Cullen Fund, Kiwi Saver and Kiwi Bank are but three examples of New Zealand First doing exactly that in the past

“We will especially go along with measures that lead to jobs, improve wages and increase exports but we will not rubber stamp short term plans that leave the country worse off in the long run,” says Mr Peters.
