One of the most anticipated dates for art lovers is approaching.

The annual Elam Graduate Show is a ‘must-see’ event for anyone interested in the next generation of artists and creative thinkers. A visual arts extravaganza featuring work by more than 130 graduating students, it offers the public the opportunity to view exciting new work by emerging artists and designers.

The show features a diverse range of artwork encompassing painting, sculpture photography, installation, sound work, design and multimedia interactive projects.

Elam students are taught by some of the country’s best contemporary artists in their field – including Michael Parekowhai who represented New Zealand at this year’s Venice Biennale as well as previous Walters Prize winners Peter Robinson and P. Mule.

“Elam’s annual graduate show draws thousands of visitors to the various exhibition sites around The University of Auckland. For families and friends of the artists there is pride and interest in their achievements. For members of the art community, especially curators, dealers, art professionals and specialists there is the added interest of noting trends as well as emerging talent in the submissions on display. But it is also a brilliant opportunity for those who are considering studying at Elam to gain inspiration and an appreciation of what they could achieve at the School” says Jonathan Mane-Wheoki, Professor of Fine Arts and Head of Elam.

When this year’s examination candidates graduate next year they will be the sixtieth cohort of Elam artists to receive their university qualifications. To mark this milestone in 2012 Elam will host a Jubilee – honouring sixty years of graduates – nearly two-and-a-half thousand of them – with an exciting programme of social and cultural events during April – May 2012.

All graduates and associates of Elam School of Fine Arts can register for the Elam Jubilee. Come to the Elam Open Home during the Graduate Show, 20 Whitaker Place / Main Fine Arts Building / 2nd floor staffroom / to the right of the library; or register at www.creative.auckland.ac.nz/elam-jubilee

Take this exciting opportunity to be inspired and gain an insight into the challenges and rewards of earning a degree from Elam School of Fine Arts – the country’s most prominent art school.

The visual arts showcase takes place from 10am to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday, 26 and 27 November at 20 Whitaker Place, 5 Symonds Street (Elam B) and 25a Princes Street (George Fraser Gallery)

Elam Graduate Show 2011 is free and open to the public. For information visit www.creative.auckland.ac.nz.

The University of Auckland’s National Institute of Creative Arts and Industries comprises the Elam School of Fine Arts, School of Architecture and Planning, the Centre for New Zealand Art Research and Discovery (CNZARD), the School of Music and the Dance Studies Programme.
