Berry Challenges Conservatives to Debate on Drugs and Alcohol

“I was horrified to find a piece of tabloid style policy in my letter box this afternoon, issued by the Conservative party,” says Independent candidate for Tamaki, Stephen Berry. “It is the literature of cheap shots and ignorance; common fare of conservative politicians. It is a demand for increased regulation on drugs and alcohol.”

Stephen Berry is one of the very few candidates nationwide who consistently stands up for individual sovereignty and the right for people to choose what they put into their own bodies. Mr Berry is the only candidate in Tamaki who has always maintained the position that only individuals are qualified to make the decision about what they put into their own bodies; never governments.

“The Conservatives are seeing a poor electoral return for Colin Craig’s millions and are clearly getting desperate,” says Stephen Berry. “With no real principles to turn to, they are seeking the vote of those who like to stick their nose in other people’s business.”

“The Conservative party’s policies appeal to those who think it is the Government’s and their own right to interfere in the personal habits of individuals. The Conservatives most certainly cannot stand the idea of other people enjoying themselves if it is not done in the Colin Craig approved manner.”

Advertising material just issued by the Conservative’s state that they will raise the alcohol purchase age to 21. It also includes a ridiculously emotive quote from a “victim of a drink driver” saying “I cry every day and have nightmares every night.” Stephen Berry says, “Colin Craig’s advertising has all the accuracy and credibility of the Reefer Madness movies put out by the US Government in the 1950’s.”

“I am on record as advocating the total legalisation and deregulation of all substances, whether medical or recreational, for all persons aged 18 and over. This deregulation will be done in conjunction with the privatisation of the health system. My policies are completely consistent with the principles of individual freedom, self-ownership and personal responsibility that I have always advocated.”

“The Conservative party is clearly a party of irrational, cheap-shot opportunistic busy bodies rather than a party of any clear principle. I am a candidate who has consistently advocated principles of personal freedom and responsibility since my first parliamentary candidacy in 2002. I challenge either Conservative leader Colin Craig or Conservative Tamaki candidate Litia Simpson to a debate on the legal status of drugs and alcohol any time they wish!”
