Conservative Party Leader Colin Craig is criticising ACT’s Law and Order policy, and it’s move to consider a Sentencing Council.

“ACT’s policy is a mistake” Mr Craig says, “the effect of a Sentencing Council would be shorter sentences in many cases where longer sentences are necessary.”

“The one thing judges in this country don’t need is help to make their sentences more lenient.”

“In addition, the introduction of a Sentencing Council would compromise our judiciary’s independence,” Mr Craig says.

“There is no logic in ACT supporting this policy. It’s a half-baked idea that was originally dreamed up by the Labour Party, and rightly rejected by the last government.”

“With this policy ACT are joining the list of parties who are not prepared to make criminals pay the full price for their offending”.

The Conservative Party is campaigning on a much tougher approach to Law and Order. Just last week criticising NZ First’s policy to shorten sentences for repeat offenders.
