Schools recognised in iWay design challenge
A number of schools are to be recognised for their student’s success in the iWay Design Challenge.
The competition challenged students to design something which contributes to the iWay project and attracted entries from Te Mata Primary, St Mary’s Primary and Havelock North Intermediate.
The students were mentored throughout the design process by professional engineers Pawel Milewski, a structural engineer with Geoff Kell Consulting, Futureintech ambassador Andy Gunson, a mechanical engineer for Transfield Worley and Emily Thomas, a Futureintech ambassador and food engineer with Heinz Wattie’s.
Hastings District Council Transportation Manager Jag Pannu says “The challenge has been a great example of how schools, engineering professionals, IPENZ and Futureintech can work together to create something which could be of great value to the community. Students and teachers have worked extremely hard to complete their projects.”
Mr Pannu says “The students have shown amazing dedication, enthusiasm and passion for their designs. The awards evening will be the culmination of the event when the winning teams will receive recognition for their achievements.”
“We are interested in hearing from schools which are looking at new ideas that encourage students to walk or cycle to school, to ensure a collaborative approach to creating safe travel options.”
The awards for the iWay Design Challenge will be presented in the Hastings District Council Chambers at 5pm on Wednesday November 2nd.
The challenge has been run by the Hastings District Council with support from the Hawke’s Bay Branch of the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ) and Futureintech.
iWay is a Hastings District Council initiative which aims to make walking and cycling in Hastings easy, safe and fun.
